Juneau Ridge Loop
The Juneau Ridge Loop is one of Southeast Alaska’s most iconic mountain routes—a rugged, sky-high traverse that feels like stepping into another world. Starting from the historic Perseverance Trail, the loop climbs steeply toward Mount Juneau before breaking out above treeline onto a serrated ridge that seems to float above the Gastineau Channel.

The stats alone tell you this is no casual outing: 13.1 miles, 4,406 ft of climbing, and long stretches of exposed, technical terrain. But numbers don’t capture the full story. This run is a journey through shifting ecosystems, weather moods, and geological drama.
From Forest Floor to Alpine Sky
The adventure begins in lush temperate rainforest, where the Perseverance Trail—once the access road to the Silverbow Mine—winds through canyon walls and past the roar of Ebner Falls.

As you climb, the world changes quickly. Spruce gives way to brush, then to rock and tundra. The air cools. The wind picks up. Suddenly you’re on the ridge, surrounded by a 360-degree panorama: the city of Juneau far below, the Chilkat Mountains in the distance, and the sinuous coastline stretching toward the horizon.

Wildlife is everywhere—ptarmigan, marmots, eagles, mountain goats, and the occasional bear. The ridge itself rolls like a spine, alternating between runnable tundra and rocky scrambles that demand focus and sure footing, but more about that later….
A Trail That Makes You Earn It
Juneau’s weather is famously unpredictable, and the ridge amplifies everything—sun feels brighter, wind feels sharper, and fog can swallow the world in minutes. Snowfields often linger into early summer, and the lower sections can be muddy and slick.

This is a route where you feel the land under your feet:
- Stream crossings that chill your ankles
- Muddy bogs that test your balance
- Steep, rocky pitches that force you to slow down and scramble

It’s a run that demands respect—and rewards grit.
The combination of trail, ascend, nature and view makes this an unforgettable experience

We were very close to the summit, and only had one more ice or snowfield to attack, when this bear looked at us, probably thinking ‘try me, fools’…and the bear was standing right at the beginning of the ice filed we were going to, so we had no other choice than turning around

Although we had several bear-proof items with us: bear bells, bear spray, and a big horn that makes a hell of a lot of noise, the bears don’t seem very impressed with our gadgets. And as we turned around and made our way back into Juneau, there was another bear, rather close this time, looking at us. We slowed down, walked very slow, made a lot of noise with bells, loud talking and the horn, yet the bear wasn’t impressed at all. At least he wasn’t interested in us and continued his walk….and so did we 🙂

Why This Run Stays With You
What makes the Juneau Ridge Loop unforgettable isn’t just the challenge. It’s the sense of immersion. You’re not just running through the landscape—you’re running on top of it, tracing the very spine of the mountains.
Every mile feels like a new chapter:
- The roar of waterfalls
- The quiet of high tundra
- The thrill of ridge running
- The relief of descending back toward the Perseverance Valley
By the time you return to the trailhead, legs tired and shoes soaked, you’ve earned not just the miles but the story.
