Bears in Hoonah

August 1st, 2023

Hoonah is a largely Tlingit community on Chichagof Island, located in Alaska’s panhandle in the southeast region of the state. From the ship’s terminal in Icy Strait Point to the town on Hoonah is only a 2 mile walk and the town is small; it takes me 5 minutes to run from one side to the other side of the village. Once you are away from the village boundaries, changes are big to see bears. Yesterday we took a car, since we didn’t have much time, and drove for about 20 minutes till we saw the first bears. They were playing, catching fish, eating grass and what other things bears do. What an amazing evening to see these creatures in their original habitat.

Here are photos from last night.
