Cool places to run series: Fraser, Canada to Skagway, Alaska

Today we had an amazing run. We were planning for the amazing adventure for a few weeks, or at least, we had been talking about it; the shorex manager and myself are both passionate runners and we had been looking at taking the train in Skagway in Alaska to Fraser in Canada. The train ride is so special as it goes across wooden bridges, passing glaciers and waterfalls and stunning lakes.

The train itself is so cool as it looks like it’s coming from a hundred year old western movie.

The square in Skagway with the train in the background makes some very scenic photos.

A few days ago, F&B director Ron, AKA my ‘neighbor’ in Belgium told us he wanted to come on a bike. Great, now we had a race crew :).

We left the ship to hop on the first train; we put Ron’s bike in one of the compartments and settled ourselves for a very scenic trip to Fraser.

Just making sure Lies is ready for the run…..obviously she is 🙂

The trip is super scenic

After 1 hour and 20 or so minutes, the train stops in the middle of nowhere in a place called Fraser which has no houses or anything else except for Canadian border patrol.

After Canadian officials checked our passports, we were allowed to leave the train.

And so we started our 36 km run. The first 7 miles are a bit uphill with some steep climbs but from there on it’s all going downhill, Literally 🙂

The total ascent is 1000 ft or 300 meter and the descent is 3300 ft or 1100 meter

getting off the train and getting ready for our 36 km run to Skagway

After 21 km or 13 miles you pass the US border patrol where you need to show your passport…after first going through a time zone 🙂

Approaching US Customs and Border Protection

All in all a fantastic run with great weather….
