I had an extreme tough run – while docked in Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala, I went for a 26.2 mile run. The temperature got up to 36C or 95F and humidity went up to 92%. I really have to get used to these temperatures again, as I haven’t been training in this kind of weather. What made it so hard is the problem that there are no facilities, no shops to buy water. Once you’re off the ship and away from the terminal, you’re in the middle of nowhere. Running in this weather really takes a toll on you; Do I normally take about 2ltr water (2 qrt) for a standard marathon, yesterday I took 5 ltr (5qrt) which sounds a lot, but trust me, it isn’t; the excessive sweating and the hot temperature make it necessary to double your intake of water. Problem is that you must carry it all…..so, I had 5 ltr of water, energy gels, and an extra pair of shoes and socks for a mid-run shoe change because of all the sweating – all in all about 7 kg (16 lbs) of supplies in my backpack. Not easy, no actually, it was crap
it fell heavy, and it was one of the tougher runs I’ve done lately. But ok, ran a marathon distance in Guatemala: Check ![]()

Ready to go out for a 26.2 mile run

Quick shoe change after 13 miles – it is so humid that you’re almost swimming in your shoes; it is important to take a few minutes to change socks and shoes in order not to build big blisters.
