Iceland Series: Akureyri

Commonly known as the Capital of the North, Akureyri is a town with a rich history, surrounded by stunning landscapes and natural wonders. The colourful town was first established as a tiny fishing village and later stretched along the coast of Eyjafjörður fjord and up the steep hills above it. The result is a town of spectacular views, with the Akureyri church towering over it as the crowning jewel.

While the town is small, there is a lot of things to see and do. Walking around the area, there a lot of pretty sights and one of the main interesting things to see is the church in Akureyri, or the Akureyrakirkja as it is called. Located in the centre of the city, it was designed by Guðjón Samúelsson and completed in 1940. Akureyrarkirkja contains a notably large 3200-pipe organ. It looks quite interesting in the setting, as many people asked me what kind of building this is. Just explore it, it’s worth it.

Walking to the town, you pass the harbor which is small but very pretty and from the point where the ship docks, it gives a great view of this stunning city

While sailing into the area, you pass some stunning views and we were lucky to see some wildlife

Of course with the weather being so great this day, I had to go out for a run so at least I could say I ran a half marathon in Akureyri.

All in all a great place to visit…
