Greenland series:

Prince Christian Sound

When visiting Greenland by cruise ship, there is a big change that you will sail through this amazing waterway called Prince Christian Sound. This Christian Sound is a waterway in Southern Greenland and it separates the mainland from Sammisoq (Christian IV Island) and other islands of the Cape Farewell Archipelago near the southernmost tip of Greenland. The name was given in honour of the prince, later king Christian VIII of Denmark.

The long fjord system is mostly surrounded by steep mountains in general reaching over 1,200 metres (3,900 ft), one of them 2,220 metres (7,280 ft) high.

The length of the sound is 100km (60 mile); it is only 500m (1500 ft) wide in some parts, and holds a single settlement of just one hundred souls, who make their living by fishing and hunting.

What makes it so special is that the sound, or at least that is the impression I got, that this is a combination between the Fjords in Norway, the fjords in Argentina and a touch of Alaska and Antarctica.

Here are some photos I took when sailing this amazing area.
