My preparation for desert runs

Or how does one prepare for a run in the sand….

In the preparation for my desert run(s),I go to areas that are a reflection of the terrain where I would run. In other words, I look for sandy environments, hills, dunes etc.

During my prep for the race, I was so lucky to be in these environments and here are some photos from the areas I trained at.

Between Area 51 and the entrance to Death Valley there is an area with a lot of sandy hills. See me in the far distance getting up the hill…
Being the fool I am, of course I had to get stuck in the sand…and with no cellphone reception, I had to run 15 miles to the nearest gas station to call for assistance.

I also was so lucky that I was doing a cruise around Africa and that I spend a few days in Walvisbaai, a place in Namibia.

From where the ship arrives, I ran to Dune 7, a 10-or-so mile run before I arrived at Dune 7

Dune 7 is the highest dune in Namibia. The dune has been measured at over 1,256 feet (300 mtr) high and is named Dune 7 because it is the seventh dune one encounters after crossing the river Tsauchab. And dude, I kid you not, this sucker is so tall that I actually got fear of height, like, seriously.

Here’s me getting up Dune 7

Took my GoPro and this is what the area looks like – packed in three long sleeve shirts and a long sleeve jacket, running uphill in 110F
