We’re writing 1988….we’re going back 35 years….
The run that stole my heart and changed my life.
I lived in Holland and at some point, on a lazy Sunday, I was hanging in front of the TV when I saw the NYC marathon – I saw thousands of runners heading towards the Verrazzano-Bridge, a suspension bridge connecting the New York City boroughs of Staten Island and Brooklyn. I never saw anything like this and I got so emotional that I decided that this was something I would do next year. I start training the following day, started several jobs to earn money to buy a ticket and indeed, the following year, I went to New York. By myself….experiencing the USA as a kid….what an amazing place. The skyscrapers, the $2 breakfasts, the yellow cabs, Central Park, I really needed time to absorb it all. I spend two weeks in this amazing city and of course finished what I was here for, the NYC marathon
A total of 22,405 runners finished the race, 18,431 men and 3974 women and…..out of all things, I still have my original certificate
